OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On October 28, 2024, Jacksonville Sheriff's Office (JSO) officers J. Rose and J. Montgomery were investigating a carjacking on Eaverson Street in the Hogans Creek neighborhood when they encountered 54-year-old Djuan Jackson. Jackson, who had no connection to the carjacking, was near the victim’s family and was alleged to have been holding what appeared to be a knife. Officers claimed Jackson made stabbing motions toward a family member and fired multiple shots at him after commanding him to drop the object. Jackson was pronounced dead at the scene.

The object Jackson was holding was later identified as a butter knife. Body-worn camera footage released by JSO shows officers issuing commands before firing. After shooting Jackson, officers placed him in handcuffs and attempted medical aid, but he died from his injuries. No officers or bystanders were reported injured.

Jackson’s daughter has criticized the response, pointing out his mental health issues and questioning why lethal force was necessary for a man armed with a butter knife. The Florida State Attorney's Office is conducting an independent investigation into the shooting. JSO will also conduct an internal review.
