Polk County deputies responded to a domestic violence call on November 9, 2024, after a woman reported being attacked by her husband, 52-year-old Charles Edwards. Upon arriving at the scene, deputies saw Edwards attacking the woman with a hammer. The deputies deployed a taser, but Edwards advanced at them while holding the hammer. Deputy Christopher Johnston then fired at Edwards, striking him multiple times. Edwards was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The woman suffered significant injuries but is expected to survive. The investigation is being handled by the 10th Judicial Circuit’s Officer Involved Deadly Incident Task Force, and an internal investigation by the sheriff’s office is underway.
