A man wanted in West Virginia for federal weapons violations was tracked to a Rodeway Inn in Jackson Township by the Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force.
The man, described as having a violent criminal history since the 1970s, brandished a firearm and barricaded himself in a motel room. The Canton Regional SWAT Team was called in after attempts to peacefully negotiate a surrender failed. The suspect fired multiple shots at officers, including through windows and walls. A North Canton police officer serving on the SWAT team was shot in the arm and required surgery.
Officers fatally shot the man during the exchange. Two firearms and several spent bullet casings were found at the scene. The situation prompted a temporary closure of a nearby section of Interstate 77.
