Deputies in Catawba County, North Carolina, responded to a suicide call around 8:41 p.m. on Rifle Ridge Road. They encountered Michael Rose, who was armed, threatening self-harm, and refused to cooperate or engage in communication with the deputies. SWAT bore down on Rose continued for hours, extending past midnight. Around 1 a.m., deputies heard what they believed was a gunshot from inside the home, followed by smokeemanating from the residence.Members of a special tactics unit entered the home due to the situation escalating.During their entry, Rose fired a shot at one of the unit members.In response, the officer returned fire, fatally striking Rose.Rose was declared dead at the scene. An elderly woman was rescued from the home without injury.
