On 07/28/2024, 57-year-old Carla Tyson was walking near the intersection of North 14th Street and West North Avenue when she was struck by a sport utility vehicle that fled the scene. Moments later, a Milwaukee Police Department squad vehicle responding to an unrelated call also struck Tyson.
Tyson was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the SUV left the area before officers arrived. Milwaukee Police investigators stated that the squad officer was responding to an emergency assignment at the time of the collision.
Tyson's family has questioned the circumstances surrounding the incident and has sought additional information regarding the police vehicle's involvement, including whether emergency lights and siren were activated and whether body-worn camera or squad video would be released.
