OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 11/19/2024, Long Beach police responded to reports of a man armed with a gun in the 5200 block of Atlantic Avenue near the First Church of Long Beach. Officers attempted to de-escalate the situation by involving a Mental Evaluation Team and a hostage negotiator. Police deployed SWAT personnel and used a flashbang grenade during a two-and-a-half-hour standoff.

Boyd reportedly displayed a firearm, prompting an exchange of gunfire with officers. Four officers opened fire. Boyd was struck and pronounced dead at the scene.

One officer sustained a gunshot wound to the arm and was treated at a local hospital and released. The incident is under investigation, and the man’s identity remains undisclosed pending notification of next of kin.
