OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On November 20, 2024, the Woodway Police Department initiated a traffic stop on Michael Scott Hughes, 31, who was wanted for felony parole violations. Hughes drove off, and DPS escalated a high-speed pursuit. During the chase, Hughes allegedly pointed a firearm out of his 2019 Chevrolet. The pursuit continued onto FM-929 in Coryell County, where Hughes lost control, crossed into the opposite lane, and collided with a 2023 Volkswagen SUV. Hughes was killed on impact, while a 61-year-old passenger in his vehicle was ejected and also killed. A 68-year-old passenger in the Volkswagen died later at the hospital, and two others were injured.
