On 06/20/2023, Highlands County deputies arrived to arrest Matthew Dillon Owens for sexual battery and molestation of a child. He fled and crashed in a citrus grove. Police deployed K9 teams to locate him, finding him in a tree. He allegedly pointed “an item” at police who shot and killed him. It is unclear what the item was and why he was shot and killed.
