OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 07/25/2024, members of the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force, which included Arkansas State Police personnel, went to a residence on E. Walnut Street in DeValls Bluff to arrest 32-year-old Darrell Lawayne Esau II on multiple outstanding felony warrants. According to investigators, Esau immediately opened fire on officers as they approached the residence.
Arkansas State Police activated its SWAT Team, Crisis Negotiation Team, Tactical Support Unit, and Air Support resources. Negotiators remained in contact with Esau for more than two hours in an effort to secure his surrender.
Investigators determined that Esau fired at least 169 rounds from six firearms, including fully automatic and high-powered rifles, during the approximately four-hour standoff. Police ultimately exchanged gunfire with Esau, who was fatally shot.
The Arkansas State Police Criminal Investigation Division investigated the shooting. On August 15, 2024, the 17th Judicial District Prosecuting Attorney concluded that the use of deadly force by members of the Arkansas State Police SWAT Team and the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force was appropriate and reasonable. As of the latest publicly available information, the officers involved have not been publicly identified.
