OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 11/21/2024, officers from the Toms River Police Department conducted a welfare check at the residence of 70-year-old John Cassidy in the 100 block of Cedar Grove Road, Toms River, New Jersey. Arriving equipped with ballistic vests and helmets, officers encountered Cassidy, who reportedly held a hammer. Police claim that Cassidy advanced toward them. Officers fired a Taser that made contact. They evacuated nearby residents to ensure safety and, when Cassidy continued to hold with the hammer, they shot and critically injured him. Cassidy was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The New Jersey Attorney General's Office is investigating the incident, and body-worn camera footage has been released in accordance with state policies.
