OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On November 28, 2024, at approximately 11:00 p.m., two Akron Police Department officers were parked at the intersection of East Avenue and Vernon Odom Boulevard, working on a report from a prior unrelated call. They reported hearing gunshots nearby and exited their vehicle to investigate. Shortly thereafter, they encountered 15-year-old Jazmir Tucker, who was seen holding a gun. One officer discharged his weapon, striking Tucker.

Tucker was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Akron Police Department has not disclosed the names of the officers involved. Both officers have been placed on paid administrative leave, per department policy.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is conducting an independent review of the incident. The state attorney general's office will review the findings before submitting the report to a Summit County grand jury. The Akron Police Department will also conduct an internal investigation.

Gary and Kathy Green, Tucker's grandparents, expressed profound grief and confusion over the incident. Gary Green stated, "I love that kid so much. It took a part of me away." The family is seeking answers regarding the circumstances that led to Tucker's death.
