On November 20, 2024, at approximately 6:10 p.m., an unmarked NYPD minivan traveling northbound on Pennsylvania Avenue in Brooklyn's East New York neighborhood struck a woman who was lying in the roadway near Riverdale Avenue. The woman, believed to be unhoused, suffered severe head injuries and was transported to Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. Witnesses reported that the unmarked police vehicle was traveling without lights or sirens at the time of the incident. The New York Attorney General's Office has opened an investigation into the incident, as required by state law when a police officer is involved in a civilian's death.
