On 12/05/2024, at approximately 9:00 p.m., deputies from the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office responded to a call regarding a dispute between neighbors on Camden Street near West Waters Avenue. The caller, Jason Douglas Paul, alleged that his neighbor had assaulted him and made threats to kill the neighbor.

Deputies found Paul acting erratically and attempted to take him into custody under Florida's Baker Act. Paul retreated into his home and refused to come out. Deputies broke through the window and entered the home. In a back bedroom, Deputy John Howes allegedly ordered Paul to drop the knife and then fired shots, striking Paul.

Paul was pronounced dead at St. Joseph's Hospital.
