On 12/28/2023, law enforcement from the Lee County Sheriff's Office and Valley Police Department were involved in a police pursuit of a Kia Forte that had been reported stolen. The chase led through two counties and into the town of Valley, where the fleeing vehicle crashed into another vehicle. The crash resulted in the death of 98-year-old Aron C. Haynes, a third-party bystander, who was in the vehicle struck by the fleeing car. Additionally, an 18-year-old passenger in the Kia Forte was killed in the collision.

Wesley T. McKinnon, the driver of the stolen Kia, was arrested by state troopers after the incident and charged with two counts of reckless murder. McKinnon was already out on bond for similar charges related to a prior fatal crash in 2021.
