On May 3, 2023, at approximately 8:34 p.m., Newark Police Department officers responded to a 9-1-1 call reporting individuals shot inside a residence on Johnson Avenue in Newark, New Jersey. Upon arrival, officers found a deceased male and an 8-year-old boy with gunshot wounds; the child was transported to University Hospital and pronounced dead at 9:14 p.m. During the response, officers encountered 29-year-old Everett Rand fleeing the scene with a firearm. Officers Steven Ferreira and Ryan Castro pursued Rand on foot, during which both officers discharged their weapons, fatally wounding him.
