On December 12, 2024, at approximately 3:00 PM, Cooke County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a domestic disturbance call in Newport, Texas. Upon arrival, deputies encountered Michael McCormick, 45, who had locked himself inside the home. Police escalated a standoff, which lasted several hours. At approximately 6:30 PM, an unknown confrontation occurred. Deputies opened fire, killing McCormick. He was pronounced dead in his home. Police have not confirmed whether he was armed and/or used any weapons on anyone before being killed.
