REASON WHY PURSUIT WAS INITIATED:
At approximately 4:00 a.m., Terre Haute dispatchers received a 911 call reporting that people inside a Jeep SUV were threatening to shoot the caller. Terre Haute Police located a Jeep matching the description and attempted to stop it.

EVENT NARRATIVE:
On 10/29/2021, at approximately 4:00 a.m., Terre Haute Police officers responded to the report of occupants of a Jeep SUV allegedly threatening another person with gunfire. Officers located a Jeep matching the description and attempted a traffic stop. The driver continued driving away and police escalated a pursuit through Terre Haute.

The pursuit continued to the area of South 13th Street and Lockport Street. During the chase, 35-year-old Shawn Michael Passwater lost control of the Jeep and crashed. The force of the collision ejected Passwater from the vehicle. He suffered fatal injuries. A passenger riding in the Jeep was also injured.

Passwater was born on 07/15/1986 in Youngstown, Ohio, attended Roachdale Elementary School and North Putnam High School, and had spent approximately 25 years training and showing horses. He won championships at both the Indiana 4-H State Fair and Kentucky State Fair and was also an accomplished coon hunter. His family said his greatest personal achievement was becoming a father to his son, Cash.
