On November 22, 2021, Kansas City Police responded to reports of a man standing in the middle of the road and jumping into traffic in the 600 block of North 57th Street. Upon arrival, officers observed Lionel Womack, a 35-year-old former detective for the Kansas City Police Department, running toward them.

Womack reportedly entered the driver's seat of a patrol car, leading to a struggle during which he allegedly disarmed an officer and pointed the firearm at another officer. In response, officers shot and killed Womack. The officer involved in this incident had previously been involved in a fatal shooting.
