REASON FOR POLICE CHASE:
Attempted drug arrest following an alleged large methamphetamine delivery. McCracken County Sheriff’s Office drug detectives were conducting an investigation at a hotel in the 5100 block of Cairo Road. Detectives alleged that a large quantity of methamphetamine had been delivered and attempted to make an arrest. Young maneuvered his Honda Civic around detectives attempting to prevent the vehicle from leaving and continued west on Cairo Road. Detectives pursued.

EVENT NARRATIVE:
On 08/02/2021, 27-year-old Lamont X. Young of De Soto, Illinois, was critically injured when his Honda Civic crashed into an uninvolved motorist during a McCracken County Sheriff’s Office drug-investigation pursuit near Barkley Regional Airport. Young was airlifted to a Nashville hospital and died from his injuries early on 08/03/2021.

McCracken County drug detectives were conducting an investigation at a hotel in the 5100 block of Cairo Road. According to the sheriff’s office, detectives alleged that Young had delivered a large quantity of methamphetamine and attempted to arrest him. Detectives positioned themselves to prevent the Honda from leaving, but Young maneuvered around them and drove west onto Cairo Road.

Detectives caught up with Young and pursued west on Cairo Road. According to their subsequent account, Young allegedly began throwing large quantities of methamphetamine from the Honda while continuing west.

The pursuit continued into a less-populated area where traffic was sparse. As the vehicles approached the intersection with U.S. Highway 60, detectives reported slowing their pursuit in an attempt to decrease pressure on Young.

At approximately 1:45 p.m., Young approached U.S. 60 near the entrance to Barkley Regional Airport. Kentucky State Police determined that he entered the intersection against a red traffic signal and collided with an eastbound 2017 Ford Explorer driven by 60-year-old Deborah Kinsey Burge of Cunningham.

Burge was pronounced dead at the scene. Young suffered critical injuries and was airlifted to Skyline Medical Center in Nashville. He died early the following morning.
