On 11/01/2021, a Houma Police Department officer shot and killed Johnny McGee, 36, after police responded at approximately 4:11 p.m. to a disturbance at a residence on Downtown Court in Houma. McGee was transported to a hospital and died from his wounds. Contemporary Louisiana reporting generally identifies him as Johnny McGee, although some secondary sources spell his surname Magee.

McGee's mother, Lorraine McGee, told WDSU that she had called police because her son was experiencing a mental health crisis. She said he had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Her account therefore establishes that police were summoned to the residence in response to a behavioral-health emergency rather than an alleged crime.

According to the Louisiana State Police preliminary investigation, McGee allegedly approached the first Houma officer while holding a screwdriver. Police reported that the officer ordered McGee to stop and attempted to create distance while McGee continued approaching. A second Houma officer arrived during the encounter.

State Police alleged that McGee raised the arm holding the screwdriver toward one of the officers, after which one Houma officer fired. Although two officers were present, reporting based on the State Police investigation states that only one fired a weapon. McGee was struck by the gunfire and transported to a local hospital, where he died.
