On 05/18/2021, 16-year-old Xander Mann fled from a traffic stop conducted by the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office in the Riverbank area. Deputies escalated a pursuit that ended when the vehicle was stopped using a tactical maneuver. During the encounter that followed, a deputy opened fire, fatally shooting Mann. He was pronounced dead shortly afterward.

On May 18, 2021, Salisbury Police Officer B.W. Jones struck and killed pedestrian Howard Miller, 59, while responding to a mental health call. Officer Jones was traveling eastbound on Old Concord Road near Gold Hill Drive; the exact speed at the time of the incident has not been disclosed. The area has limited street lighting. On May 18, 2021, at approximately 11:00 a.m., deputies from the Jackson County Sheriff's Office responded to a reported domestic assault at a residence in the 1500 block of Queens Branch Road near Wimer, Oregon. Before their arrival, 32-year-old Rodney Purslow left the home in a vehicle. The injured victim, identified as hisfather, informed deputies that Purslow might be armed and was potentially a danger to himself.

Purslow returned to the residence in his vehicle, holding a loaded .22 caliber rifle. Purslow allegedly walked toward the deputies who open fire, killing him.

On May 17, 2021, at approximately 5:00 p.m., a Monterey Park Police Department officer was nearing the end of his shift and went to the Monterey Park Fire Department's headquarters, located in the 300 block of West Newmark Avenue, to refuel his vehicle. A man, later identified as 57-year-old Yong Liu, followed the officer in a Nissan SUV into a secured parking lot. After the officer parked and exited his vehicle, Liu, armed with a knife, allegedly charged at the officer. The officer opened fire, striking Liu. Liu was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

On 05/17/2021, Charles County Sheriff's Office deputies responded after a family member reported that Denzell Nathan Clarke, who was wanted by police, was experiencing a mental health crisis. Upon arrival at the 6300 block of Josephine Road in Waldorf, two deputies were wounded while attempting to serve a warrant. Clarke allegedly shot at the deputies, who then exchanged gunfire. Clarke subsequently locked himself inside the home. When officers entered, they found Clarke dead from gunshot wounds.

On May 16, 2021, at approximately 2:14 a.m., officers observed a vehicle driven by Marcus "Marc the Barber" Jeffries driving erratically. Suspecting he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol, officers attempted to stop the vehicle. Jeffries fled the scene, and a pursuit followed through surrounding neighborhoods. The chase ended when Jeffries crossed railroad tracks at a high rate of speed and crashed into a pole, killing him.

On 05/16/2021, Baltimore Police Department officers responded to a call at 1800 block E. Lafayette Avenue in Baltimore at 10: 39 a.m. regarding a family disturbance. Upon arrival, they were informed by someone outside that a man, later identified as Timothy Fleming, was inside with a knifeand holding a woman at knifepoint. Officers entered the home and proceeded to the second floor, where they encountered Fleming, the woman, and another family member. Fleming allegedly grabbed the woman by her hair and made a motion as if to stab her. Two officers then fired their weapons, killing Fleming.

On May 14, 2021, deputies with the Augusta County Sheriff's Office responded to a 911 call reporting a break-in at a home on Blue Fish Lane. Upon arrival, deputies encountered a man who fled the scene and ran into the woods behind the house. The deputies followed the man, but as they reached the wood line, Jeffrey Bruce allegedly turned around, had a knife and charged toward a deputy. The deputy responded by shooting and killing Bruce.

On May 14, 2021, around 6:30 p.m., officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department responded to an apartment complex in the 7800 block of Red Mill Drive following a report of an armed, suicidal person. Monolito Ford had allegedly fired at least one shot into the air before police arrived. Three officers encountered Ford, who was reportedly armed and walking toward them. Cedric Vick, 22, was reportedly armed when he crashed near West 1st Avenue and North Perry Street after Denver Police escalated a pursuit. Police said the chase began after Vick was suspected of firing a gun and carjacking a vehicle. During the pursuit, Vick allegedly shot at officers. On 05/14/2021, at approximately 3:25 p.m., deputies from the Pennington County Sheriff's Office responded to a call about an intoxicated and out-of-control family member at a residence on Radar Hill Road. Upon arrival, deputies confronted a man, later identified as Ty Quinton Stilwell, who was carrying a long gun. Deputies ordered him to drop the weapon, but Stilwell reportedly leveled the gun in their direction and ignored their commands. In response to the perceived threat, the deputies used deadly force, shooting and killing Stilwell.

On 05/13/2021, police in Visalia, California, pursued a stolen van driven by a 20-year-old man. The chase ended at the intersection of Goshen Avenue and Demaree Street when Olivarez crashed into a Ford SUV driven by 43-year-old Jessica Bingaman. Bingaman, who operated a local dog daycare business, was killed in the collision along with five of the six dogs in her vehicle.

On 05/12/2021, in Bakersfield, California, law enforcement agencies responded to a reported attempted kidnapping of a juvenile in the 2200 block of Niles Street. The trooper escalated pursuit; the driver did not stop. The trooper allegedly "called off the chase" due to inclement weather and high speeds, just before the Explorer veered off the roadway, struck a parked vehicle, overturned, and hit a utility pole. Horton might have been under the influence of an unknown substance and needed medical attention. On 05/08/2021, police responded to a 911 call from a homeowner in the 4000 block of Northwest 33rd Street, Oklahoma City. The caller reported that Daniel Hobbs, who was under a victim protection order, was present in their yard. Upon arrival, officers engaged in a struggle with Hobbs. During the altercation, an officer fired their weapon, killing Hobbs.

On 05/08/2021, Deputy R.W. Marcelle of the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office attempted to stop a 2003 Cadillac traveling recklessly on Martinsburg Pike (U.S. 11) near Welltown Road. The driver, identified as Kondwani Rogers of Frederick County, continued driving at speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour. The deputy activated his emergency equipment, but Rogers continued south on North Frederick Pike (U.S. 522) toward Winchester. During the pursuit, the Cadillac crossed the center line, sideswiped a Honda Civic, then collided head-on with a Chevrolet Trailblazer. The Cadillac overturned and caught fire. Rogers was pronounced dead at the scene. One driver was hospitalized with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, and another declined treatment.

On May 7, 2021, at approximately 12:30 a.m., Providence Police officers responded to reports of a man screaming in the street near 345 Angell Street, possibly under the influence of narcotics. Upon arrival, they encountered 34-year-old Joseph L. Ventre Jr., who was rolling on the ground and groaning unintelligibly. Officers attempted to calm Ventre and requested assistance from the Providence Fire Department. Due to his erratic behavior and for the safety of all involved, officers decided to restrain Ventre. Body camera footage shows officers holding Ventredown on his stomach for approximately 90 seconds while handcuffing him. Shortly thereafter, Ventre became unresponsive. Emergency responders initiated CPR and transported him to Rhode Island Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:41 a.m. The Rhode Island Medical Examiner later determined that Ventre's death was due to the combined toxic effects of methamphetamine and methadone during police restraint.

On May 7, 2021, law enforcement officers from the Carteret County Sheriff's Office, Morehead City Police Department, and North Carolina State Patrol pursued Richard Kelly Murphrey, 35, who was wanted on several outstanding charges such as carrying a concealed weapon, and numerous drug-related offenses.

Murphrey initially fled from officers but was stopped near NC-24 and Paradise Lane in Newport, North Carolina. Following a standoff, Murphrey exited his vehicle and used a rifle to fatally shoot himself.

On 05/06/2021, deputies from the Oakland County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to a residence at the intersection of Mead Road and Wimberly Drive in Rochester Hills following a complaint that a man was threatening suicide. Initial contact was made with the man via phone, during which a single gunshot was heard, and communication was subsequently lost. At approximately 7 a.m., deputies entered the home and discovered the man deceased from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

On May 6, 2021, at approximately 3:54 a.m., officers from the Casper Police Department attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle. As officers approached, the driver exited the vehicle, and the passenger moved into the driver's seat and allegedly attempted to flee. One officer contacted the driver, while the other officer tried to stop the fleeing vehicle. The vehicle entered I-25, heading into oncoming traffic lanes. The officer, still inside the vehicle with the driver, continued to order the driver to stop. At this point, the officer shot and killed the driver, reportedly stopping the vehicle along the side of the Interstate.

On 05/05/2021, Los Angeles police pursued a 27-year-old man in the Hollywood neighborhood after attempting to detain him. The man fled on foot, climbed a fence, and was struck with a Taser during the pursuit. Moments later, he produced a firearm and fatally shot himself. Police reported that no officers fired their weapons. The incident is under investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department’s Force Investigation Division.

On May 5, 2021, Winston-Salem Police officers responded to reports of a violent altercation at a residence in the 500 block of Lockland Avenue. Edwin "Joey" Joseph Castillo Jr., 34, was involved in chaotic interactions with housemates and police.
Castillo allegedly struck his roommate in the head with a hammer and fired shots at officers. Police opened fire, killing Castillo during the encounter. The Winston-Salem Police Department is investigating the incident and the circumstances leading to the use of deadly force.

On May 5, 2021, Matthew Robert Long barricaded himself inside his residence in Corvallis, Montana. After approximately 58 hours, authorities used a robot to enter the home, where they found Long dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
