OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On June 1, 2021, at approximately 2:30 a.m., deputies from the St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office and officers from the Berwick Police Department responded to a report of a suspicious individual near Sixth Street and Utah Street in Berwick, Louisiana. Robert Pearce, a 37-year-old male from New Iberia, ran away on foot. Police escalated a chase and alleged that Pearce attempted to enter a vehicle occupied by a female driver while holding an object they believed was a gun. Law enforcement opened fire, killing Pearce.
He was pronounced dead on the street by the St. Mary Parish Coroner's Office.

Investigators later disclosed that Pearce had been unarmed and was carrying only a BB pistol. The Louisiana State Police are investigating the shooting.
