On November 21, 2021, at approximately 10:55 p.m., a Prince George's County Police Department officer observed a silver Acura being driven erratically in the 3300 block of Queens Chapel Road in Mount Rainier, Maryland. The officer initiated a traffic stop, and the driver, identified as 28-year-old Isiah Smith, initially complied by stopping the vehicle.

As the officer approached on foot, Smith drove away, prompting a police pursuit. During the pursuit, another officer discovered that the tags on the vehicle did not belong to the Acura Smith was driving. The pursuit continued into Northeast Washington, D.C., where Smith lost control of the vehicle near Michigan Avenue and Bunker Hill Road, resulting in a crash. Smith was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.
