On 04/28/2021, a deputy from the Hillsdale County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to a home in the 6500 block of South Edon Road in Reading, Michigan, following a complaint about a dog at large. Upon arrival, the deputy was allegedly bitten by the dog. He shot and killed the animal. Following this, Oscar Herrera, the dog's owner, allegedly confronted the deputy while armed with a knife. The deputy used deadly force, shooting and killing Herrera. The incident is under investigation by Michigan State Police. The family of Oscar Herrera, represented by Attorney Ian Fallon, has viewed the bodycam footage but has called for its public release for transparency and accountability.
