REASON WHY PURSUIT WAS INITIATED:
Robbinsdale Police officers spotted a black Mercedes SUV that had been reported stolen during an armed carjacking in Minneapolis the previous evening. Officers attempted a high-risk traffic stop after locating the vehicle near County Road 81 and Abbott Avenue North.

EVENT NARRATIVE:
On 12/09/2021, at approximately 2:00 a.m., Robbinsdale Police officers located the reported stolen Mercedes SUV near County Road 81 and Abbott Avenue North in Robbinsdale. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle and then escalated a high-speed pursuit when the driver continued driving away. Five juveniles were inside the SUV.

Police pursued the SUV east along Lowry Avenue from Robbinsdale into northeast Minneapolis. Robbinsdale Police Chief Patrick Foley said the pursuit covered approximately four miles. The SUV eventually lost control at Lowry Avenue Northeast and Hayes Street Northeast near Windom Park. The force of the collision split the SUV into two pieces.

Sixteen-year-old Shawndale Devon Hickman, a passenger in the SUV, died at the crash scene from multiple blunt-force injuries. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner recorded his time of death as approximately 2:27 a.m. A second juvenile survived the initial crash but subsequently died at a hospital. The remaining three juveniles suffered substantial injuries and were hospitalized.
