On May 3, 2021, officers from the Biloxi Police Department were searching for Eric Derell Smith, who was wanted for alleged kidnapping and double homicide. During the confrontation on I-10, Smith exchanged gunfire with the police. He was killed in the shootout. Tragically, during the same incident, baby La'Mello Parker was also shot and killed by a police shooter.
