On August 12, 2021, a Missoula Police Department officer attempted a traffic stop on Brendon T. Galbreath, believed to be driving under the influence. Galbreath fled, initiating a high-speed chase through Missoula, ignoring traffic signals. After the pursuit ended, Galbreath allegedly drew a handgun and fired. Although the officer returned fire, Galbreath ultimately died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A subsequent jury trial cleared the officer of any criminal responsibility in the incident.
