OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 07/23/2021, at approximately 10:19 p.m., officers with the Asbury Park Police Department responded to a residence at 305 7th Avenue after receiving reports that 27-year-old James Manzo was behaving erratically and threatening another person inside the home.
Officers attempted to communicate with Manzo but were unable to resolve the situation. According to investigators, when officers entered his room, Manzo advanced toward an officer while holding a pair of scissors and attempted to stab him. Officer James R. Crawford fired his service weapon, striking Manzo. Officers rendered aid until emergency medical personnel arrived, but Manzo died from his injuries.
The Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office and the New Jersey Attorney General's Office investigated the shooting. In 2022, prosecutors concluded that Officer Crawford's use of deadly force was legally justified under New Jersey law and announced that no criminal charges would be filed.
Manzo's family questioned aspects of the police response and the circumstances that led to the shooting. Publicly available records do not indicate that Officer Crawford was disciplined or that the investigation resulted in any departmental policy changes.
