On November 11, 2021, at approximately 4 p.m., NYPD officers pulled over 65-year-old Brian Astarita for allegedly speeding in a gray Jeep Cherokee near Bay 8th Street in Brooklyn, New York. As the officer approached the vehicle, Astarita fled, prompting a pursuit. During the chase, Astarita reportedly rammed the patrol car after it stopped in front of his Jeep.

Astarita then exited his vehicle, retrieved a BB gun from the back seat, and began walking toward the officers on the highway. Officers opened fire, killing him.
