On December 11, 2024, at approximately 12:42 p.m., a man drove a black 2000 Toyota Tundra onto the sidewalk outside the El Cajon Police Department headquarters at 100 Civic Center Way in El Cajon, California. The vehicle struck an officer and a tree. The officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was treated and released from Scripps Mercy Hospital.

The man allegedly reversed the vehicle, but his actions remain unclear without further evidence. Two officers opened fire, striking Benjamin Grube. He was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
