OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 11/21/2021, Greensboro Police Department officers responded to reports of a robbery and shots fired in the 900 block of South Elm-Eugene Street. Officers located Joseph Thomas Lee Lopez, 32, who had a gun. Police said Lopez fired at officers during the encounter. Officer M.E. Hamilton opened fire and shot Lopez. Lopez was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. No officers were killed. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation conducted the independent investigation into the shooting.
