OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On June 24, 2021, at approximately 2:30 p.m., members of the U.S. Marshals Service Carolinas Regional Fugitive Task Force attempted to arrest 54-year-old William Dean Hewett outside the Walmart on Columbus Corners Drive in Whiteville, North Carolina. Hewett was wanted in connection with the murder of his estranged girlfriend, Brandy Lynn Price, in Pender County.
As officers approached, Hewett reportedly drew a firearm. Task force members responded by discharging their weapons, fatally striking Hewett. No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is conducting an independent review of the shooting, and the District Attorney’s Office will determine if the use of force was justified.
