OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On June 16, 2021, Bessemer City Police Department officers attempted to serve arrest warrants on two individuals at a residence on the 100 block of Sunset Lane. While at the scene, officers identified Billy Jack Barker as another individual wanted on outstanding warrants. When officers attempted to take Barker into custody, he fled on foot.Officers pursued Barker for a short distance, repeatedly ordering him to stop and show his hands. During the chase, Barker reached toward his waistband multiple times. Bessemer City Police Officers D.F. James and C.L. Jarvis opened fire, killing Barker.
