On April 28, 2021, Isaac Alton Barnes, 32, allegedly killed his mother and stepfather before engaging in a standoff with the Watauga County Sheriff's Office at a residence on 553 Hardaman Circle in Boone, North Carolina.

During the 13-hour standoff, Barnes also allegedly shot and killed two responding deputies. After prolonged negotiations and exchanges of gunfire, Barnes reportedly used a firearm to take his own life.
