On March 23, 2021, according to his fiancée, Frankie Jennings, 32, was pumping gas at a gas station in Charlotte when U.S. Marshals arrived. Jennings was unaware of the officers who were about to confront him. Law enforcement initiated the confrontation, and Jennings allegedly reached for a firearm inside his car. However, his fiancée, Nayja Johnson, disputes this and claims Jennings had his hands up and did not pose an immediate threat.
Despite this, Deputy U.S. Marshal Eric Tillman fired three shots, fatally wounding Jennings. Jennings died at the gas station. Johnson has filed a lawsuit seeking accountability for what she believes was an unjustified use of deadly force.
