On 12/23/2021, Akron Police Department officers responded to a reported home invasion at a residence on the 2400 block of 26th St SW. James W. Gross allegedly broke into the home of his estranged wife, where she, her boyfriend, and their dog were hiding in a bedroom. Gross reportedly broke through the bedroom door, holding a knife to the woman’s throat.

Police entered the house, deployed a Taser to subdue Gross, and subsequently opened fire, killing him. The incident is under investigation by the Akron Police Department.
