On April 15, 2021, at approximately 4 a.m., Cleveland Police received a call about a man wanted in connection with unspecified crimes. Officers initially responded to the location on the 13600 block of Beachwood Avenue in Cleveland, Ohio, but the man "got away."

Later that morning, officers returned after receiving another call about the same individual. Officers located the man and pursued him on foot into a backyard. During the encounter, officers commanded the man to put his hands up and get down. The individual, identified as 25-year-old Innes Lee Jr., allegedly turned toward the officer and pulled a gun from his waistband. The officer fired, shooting and killing Lee.
