On January 2, 2021, at approximately 10:00 a.m., Springfield Police officers responded to a domestic disturbance call near Apollo Avenue and Olympic Street. Charles Ferguson, 64, reportedly opened fire on officers with a high-powered rifle. Police escalated a standoff. After approximately nine hours and multiple exchanges of gunfire, officers heard a single gunshot from inside the residence. Upon entry, they found Ferguson deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
