REASON FOR CHASE: Larceny investigation

NARRATIVE:
On 04/11/2021 at approximately 4:00 a.m., Chouteau police attempted to stop a pickup truck reportedly connected to a larceny investigation. The male driver continued away and police pursued, beginning a lengthy multi-jurisdictional chase through northeastern Oklahoma.

The pursuit traveled through several communities and counties, including the Wagoner, Pryor, Okay and Fort Gibson areas, as officers from additional law-enforcement agencies joined or assisted. During the pursuit, police reported that someone inside the pickup fired multiple gunshots toward pursuing officers. Officers returned fire during the chase.

The pursuit eventually reached the Fort Gibson area. Police lost sight of the pickup for a period before locating it crashed along North Six Mile Road. The driver had been ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The fatality resulted from the crash rather than a documented gunshot wound despite the exchange of gunfire during the pursuit. No additional fatalities were reported.
