OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
Tony Garcia, a 70-year-old Latino man, was arrested for the 1981 murders of Rachel Zendejas and Lisa Gondek. While in custody at Todd Road Jail, Garcia was assaulted multiple times by inmates. The final attack in April 2024 left him comatose, and he died in November 2024 from complications of blunt head trauma. His death was ruled a homicide. The Ventura County Sheriff's Office is investigating the circumstances of the assaults.
