On June 24, 2021, at approximately 7:06 p.m., Officer Curtis Brown of the Portland Police Bureau responded to a welfare check at a Motel 6 located in the 500 block of Northeast Holladay Street in Portland, Oregon. Michael Ray Townsend, 40, had called 911, expressing suicidal ideations. Upon arrival, Officer Brown encountered Townsend, who was reportedly armed with a sharp-ended screwdriver.

Despite commands to drop the weapon, Townsend advanced toward Officer Brown, prompting the officer to use deadly force. Townsend was fatally shot at the scene.
