OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On May 12, 2021, at approximately 3:45 p.m., officers from the Gervais Police Department responded to a disturbance in the 1000 block of Depot Court in Gervais, Oregon. They discovered 22-year-old Arik Reed suffering from a gunshot wound after attempting to prevent the kidnapping of 17-year-old Oliver "Ollie" Taylor. Kenneth William Peden III fled the scene with Taylor in a white Ford F-150 truck.

Multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Marion County Sheriff's Office, the Silverton Police Department, and the Jackson County Sheriff's Office, escalated a chase during which police engaged in a shootout. Taylor was found with a gunshot wound and transported to a hospital, where he died from his injuries on May 19, 2021. Police have not disclosed who shot and killed Taylor during the shootout. Law enforcement has not released ballistics reports to confirm which bullet caused Taylor's death. A grand jury cleared the officers involved, determining that either way, the use of force was justified.

On September 22, 2021, Kenneth William Peden III was found deceased in his jail cell, and his death was ruled a suicide.
