OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On August 13, 2024, 62-year-old inmate Jose Barrera was found unresponsive in his cell at the Bexar County Jail in San Antonio, Texas. Detention officers initiated life-saving measures, but Barrera was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigations revealed that Barrera's cellmate, identified as 28-year-old Anthony Chase McGruder, had assaulted him, leading to his death. McGruder, who was already incarcerated on charges including assault causing bodily injury and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, was subsequently charged with murder. The Texas Rangers are leading the investigation, with the Bexar County Sheriff's Office Internal Affairs and Public Integrity Units conducting separate administrative reviews.
