OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On November 12, 2024, at approximately 11:30 p.m., 46-year-old inmate Marcus Joseph Fontenette was found unresponsive in a booking cell at the Bexar County Adult Detention Center in San Antonio, Texas. Medical staff had previously approached a jail deputy to perform an evaluation of Fontenette, who had refused treatment. Upon the deputy's arrival at the cell, Fontenette was found unresponsive. Life-saving measures were immediately initiated by the deputy, with assistance from medical personnel. Despite these efforts, Fontenette was pronounced dead shortly after midnight on November 13, 2024. Preliminary indications suggest that he suffered a medical episode prior to his death; however, the official cause and manner of death will be determined by the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office. Fontenette had been booked into the facility earlier on November 12, 2024, charged with violation of a criminal trespass warrant. In compliance with the Sandra Bland Act, the Bexar County Precinct 2 Constable’s Office is leading the death investigation, while the Bexar County Sheriff's Office Internal Affairs Unit is conducting an administrative review. This incident marks the 13th in-custody death at the facility in 2024.
