OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On November 13, 2024, Cecilia Michelle Covarrubias, a 41-year-old detainee at Santa Barbara County Main Jail, was found unresponsive in her single-person observation cell within the Inmate Reception Center at approximately 4:50 p.m., with a ligature around her neck. Covarrubias was pronounced dead approximately 40 minutes later. She had been booked into the jail on November 12, 2024, on felony charges including assault with a deadly weapon, evading a peace officer with wanton disregard for safety of others, and driving under the influence of drugs, with bail set at $75,000. The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office is conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death, and the cause and manner of death are pending further investigation by the Coroner’s Bureau.
