On December 2, 2024, at approximately 5:00 a.m., 29-year-old Mason Johnston was found deceased in his cell at the Cherokee County Jail in Jacksonville, Texas. Johnston had been incarcerated since July 30, 2021, facing charges including four counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child, continuous sexual assault of a child, and assault on a public servant. His body was sent to the Southwestern Institute of Forensic Science for an autopsy. The Texas Rangers and the Cherokee County Criminal Investigation Division are investigating the incident, as per the Sheriff's Office policy.
