OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 11/23/2022, 29-year-old Nikita Pertsev was found unresponsive in his cell at the Nassau County Correctional Center in East Meadow, New York. An autopsy revealed that he died of acute fentanyl intoxication. Pertsev had been incarcerated since December 2020, following an arrest for assault in the second degree, criminal mischief in the third degree, petit larceny, and resisting arrest.
At the time of his death, he was awaiting trial and had not been convicted of these charges. Following his death, Pertsev's mother filed a $20 million federal civil rights lawsuit against Nassau County, alleging that staffing, budget, and training issues prevented correction officers from providing adequate care to her son.
