On 11/08/2021, a Monteagle Police Department officer shot and killed Angie McFarland, 50, near Summerfield Market on Highway 41 in Monteagle. Police had been dispatched after receiving a report of a person with a weapon in the area. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation identified McFarland and reported that she was pronounced dead at the scene.

A Monteagle officer responding to the call encountered McFarland with a firearm. According to the TBI's preliminary account, McFarland allegedly pointed the firearm at the officer during the confrontation. The officer then fired, striking and killing her.

District Attorney General J. Michael Taylor told the Chattanooga Times Free Press that McFarland allegedly had a shotgun and had been threatening people before police arrived. Taylor said preliminary information indicated that she pointed the shotgun at the officer and would not put it down. He said investigators did not believe McFarland fired the shotgun.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation opened an independent investigation at the request of 12th Judicial District Attorney General J. Michael Taylor. TBI agents collected evidence and conducted interviews to reconstruct the encounter. Investigators also sought surveillance video from the nearby market. The completed investigative findings were to be submitted to the district attorney for review.
