On January 25, 2025, Atchison Police responded to reports of a hostage situation involving 36-year-old Bryson McCray of St. Joseph, Missouri. McCray had barricaded himself in a residence with a hostage, prompting a standoff. Negotiators were able to secure the release of the hostage unharmed. During the confrontation that followed, McCray reportedly fired at officers. Police opened fire, striking McCray. He was transported to a local hospital, where he later died. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is conducting an independent investigation into the shooting.
