Jose Barrera, 62, was found unresponsive in his cell at the Bexar County Adult Detention Center on August 13, 2024. He had been booked earlier that day for a violation of the annual sex offender registry. Another detained individual, 28-year-old Anthony Chase McGruder, was charged with his murder. According to reports, McGruder admitted to investigators that he "killed a guy" and had previously assaulted other detained individuals.
